Position Summary:

  • BioFire Defense, LLC, is looking to hire a Bioinformatics Intern. This is a full-time or part-time, non-exempt position. This internship position is a part of a dynamic team working on developing bioinformatic methods and tools for the purpose of sequence storage, retrieval, and analysis. This person works closely with our Bioinformatics Assistant on a variety of projects. Performs entry-level bioinformatic tasks, or collaborates with Bioinformatics Assistant to perform tasks, such as general coding, design and implementation of software, maintenance and management of server environments, software validation activities, learns and contributes bioinformatic knowledge and expertise of R&D, and keeps an accurate record of all work done in accordance with the quality system. Requires some problem solving and programming skills. Intern normally receives general training and instructions on routine work, detailed training, and instruction on new assignments. Reports to a Biomathematician.

 

Principal Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all work in compliance with company policy and within the guidelines of BioFire Defense Quality system.
  • Performs or assists with bioinformatic analysis of sequences related to pathogens detected by several different instruments produced by BioFire.
  • Responsible for research and/or development in collaboration with others for assigned projects.
  • Performs or assists with general database and server management.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of bioinformatic workflows, tools and software related to projects in R&D.
  • Responsible for version control and software verification/validation activities.
  • Assists in developing and revising quality control documentation, involving controlled Word and Excel documents.
  • Ensures that electronic laboratory notebook for assigned projects/experiments are maintained in accordance with the BioFire Defense Employment Handbook.

 

Training and Education

  • Requires enrollment in a 2-year Associates Degree or bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline, computer science or equivalent and demonstrated working knowledge of scientific principles.

 

 Experience/Skills/Physical Requirements:

  • 0-3 years’ experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Some knowledge of molecular biology concepts, computational biology and/or bioinformatics.
  • Some knowledge of general computer science principles.
  • Proficiency with at least one programming language (R, Python, or MATLAB preferred).
  • Skills desired:
    • Unix and/or shell scripting
    • SQL and familiarity with general database architecture
  • Ability to safely lift and maneuver 50 lbs.
